Nearly every clinician must be able to evaluate and treat patients with cardiac disease, as they represent the largest subset of patients with significant disease. The Clinical Cardiology Elective is offered both as a 4-week comprehensive review of cardiology and a 2-week focused review of the most important skills in clinical cardiology. Primary Goals (2 & 4 week programs)
1. Students are trained to further develop and hone their cardiac bedside examination skills and are expected to be able to explain the physiologic significance of bedside findings and to be able to list a reasonable diagnosis based on the history and bedside examination.
2. Students are trained to interpret the most important 12-lead ECG and arrhythmia findings.
3. Students are trained to identify and manage patients with a wide range of cardiovascular problems, including: acute coronary syndrome, heart failure, hypertension, valvular heart disease, congenital heart disease and pericardial heart disease.
Course Structure - 4 Week Program
1. The diagnosis and management of heart valvular disease, coronary disease, hypertensive heart disease, heart failure and congenital lesions are covered by interactive and didactic lectures, patient presentations, the UMedic multimedia computer curriculum, and by group and individual sessions with Harvey, the Cardiopulmonary Patient Simulator.
2. Students will learn 12-lead ECG and arrhythmia interpretation through daily small group sessions with faculty.
3. While patients are evaluated (during certain rotations), there are no specific patient care responsibilities.
4. Student evaluation is achieved by several methods, including pre- and post-testing of skills and cognitive knowledge and daily contact with faculty during large- and small-group sessions.
