The Evolution of Harvey® and Healthcare Simulation at the Gordon Center

Harvey®, the Cardiopulmonary Patient Simulator invented by our founder Dr. Michael Gordon, is the longest continuous university-based simulation project in medical education. Harvey has evolved over several generations and remains at the cutting edge of simulation technology. With more than 1000 systems at 700+ institutions in 55 countries, Harvery’s global impact is undeniable.


Honoring and Celebrating Florida’s Urban Search and Rescue Task Forces 1 & 2

In a special ceremony recognizing the unwavering commitment and bravery of local first responders, the Gordon Center honored and presented 80 new helmets to members of the Florida Urban Search and Rescue Task Force-1 and Task Force-2. Members of these task forces trained at the Gordon Center and have been on the frontlines of the Surfside Champlain building collapse, recent fires in Maui, Hurricane Ian, and more. The Gordon Center, employing a train-the-trainer model, has been instrumental in developing the skills and techniques that Urban Search & Rescue Teams use when lives are on the line. This ceremony not only celebrated the tireless efforts of these teams, but also highlighted the state-of-the-art training first responders receive at the Gordon Center, founded by the late Dr. Michael S. Gordon. With a legacy spanning over 45 years, the center continues to set a global standard for medical and rescue training.


Meet the Experts: Dr. Ivette Motola

From humble beginnings in Cuba to an expert leader in the fields of Prehospital and Emergency Medicine, Simulation Education, and Team Training, Dr. Ivette Motola’s story is unparalleled and inspiring. Serving as Director of the Gordon Center’s Prehospital and Emergency Training Division and Center Assistant Director, Dr. Motola leads the development and worldwide dissemination of innovative training programs for thousands of healthcare professionals. Her recent collaboration with the American Heart Association on the Advanced Stroke Life Support Blended Learning course is reaching audiences across the globe, helping share stroke care knowledge and skills to save lives.

Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS) in Tallahassee, Florida

Leon County EMS participated in our Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS) course in Tallahassee, Florida. POCUS plays a critical role in Emergency Medical Services (EMS) by allowing first responders to rapidly diagnose and treat life-threatening injuries with new portable, wireless ultrasound technology before patients reach the Emergency Department.
We applaud the dedication of the professionals who participated in this endeavor and hope this inspires other EMS teams to pursue additional training as well.

First There First Care Conference 2024

The First There First Care Conference just announced its 2024 dates.
The Gordon Center was there earlier this year and hosted simulation training activities covering Active Shooter Hostile Events and Advanced Airway Management. Look behind the scenes with the Gordon Center and see our onsite experience alongside some of South Florida’s finest first responders. We look forward to participating in 2024.

University of Miami Health System Nursing Residents: First Five Minutes

Nursing Residents from University of Miami Health System recently completed our “First Five Minutes” training, a course that equips healthcare professionals with essential skills to provide critical care while waiting for emergency Rapid Response Teams (RRTs).

First Five Minutes training is designed to empower nurses and medical staff to confidently handle critical situations so that, by the time the RRT arrives, they will have already initiated crucial interventions that could be life-saving.

Dayna James, an integral member of the Gordon Center instructor team, has served with us for 8 years. Dayna has made a significant impact teaching life-saving emergency and resuscitation courses. Dayna’s favorite aspect of working at the Gordon Center is the close-knit community and family-like atmosphere, fostering camaraderie beyond the classroom. As she looks to the future, she continues to bring her expertise and passion to advance the Gordon Center’s mission.

Introducing Michele Leith, BSN, CNOR, MSN, one of our Nursing Simulation Instructors at the Gordon Center. From training Rapid Response Teams to instructing Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Michele loves the variety of subjects she gets to teach, providing engaging simulation instruction and skills verification to students, first responders, and seasoned healthcare professionals. She thrives alongside the supportive and professional staff at the Gordon Center and was honored to be named Rookie of the Year in 2022, after her first year as an instructor!
